Years ago, John Worthington found out that his cousin had Leukemia. John and his father volunteered to donate their blood platelets to help his cousin with his battle against cancer. Ever since that day, when John saw a young child with Cancer, it hurt him deeply and he wished that there was something more that he could do to help these children and their families.

A couple of years ago he got an idea. He got to work immediately researching the possibility of changing his idea into a reality. Lights for Life, Inc is now a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity dedicated to helping children with Cancer.

John’s idea was to take old and broken holiday string lights and recycle them in order to reclaim the Copper and PVC that they contain and sell them back to the manufacturing industry. The funds received from selling these commodities are used to help children with cancer and their families with medical bills and other expenses not covered by insurance, along with sponsoring kids camps and helping to fund childhood cancer research.

With the help of his wife, Linda, Lights for Life is starting  it’s fourth year in collecting old holiday string lights. “We started in the northern Colorado area collecting 3 tons of string lights. With the help of Ace Hardware we expanded our collection area and were able to collect and recycle over 18 tons of string lights our second year. Our ultimate goal is to take our mission national over the next couple years. Through the recycling of the old holiday lights and other copper wire, we will not only be able to provide financial assistance to families in need, but help with some emotional relief by sponsoring kids camps for children that have to face daily trials and troubles that the average person can only begin to imagine.”
